Your health revealed by your nails

We pride ourselves on our outer appearances - going to huge lengths to ensure we look amazing on a night out or on holiday. One key signature to our look is that mani-pedi we treat ourselves to every so often. But did you know that your nails are more than just a canvas for that beautiful shade of polish you picked at your recent manicure — they’re a window into your overall health. Subtle changes in texture, colour, or shape can provide clues about your physical health, often signaling nutritional deficiencies, underlying health issues, or the need for self-care. Paying attention to these signs can help you stay proactive about your well-being. Read on to find out more.

Pale or white nails

Nails that appear unusually pale or white may indicate anemia, a condition caused by low red blood cell levels. They can also suggest a lack of essential nutrients like iron. In some cases, white nails with pink tips, known as Terry’s nails, could point to liver or kidney issues, so it’s worth checking in with a healthcare provider.

Yellow nails

Yellowing nails are often caused by fungal infections, but they can also signal respiratory issues or diabetes if the discoloration persists. Smoking and excessive use of nail polish can also cause nails to turn yellow, so consider lifestyle factors and avoid leaving the same nail polish on for weeks at a time.

Brittle or cracked nails

If your nails break or peel easily, it could be a sign of overexposure to water or chemicals. For those of us with our hands constantly in one dish or other, we have to take great care to ensure we use gloves to protect them. Brittle nails can also indicate a deficiency in biotin, an essential B vitamin, or thyroid problems. Incorporating biotin-rich foods like eggs and nuts into your diet may help strengthen them. For those of us on the more ‘mature’ end of the age scale, brittle nails can also be common.

Ridges on the nails

Horizontal ridges, also known as Beau’s lines, could indicate a temporary halt in nail growth due to illness or significant stress. Vertical ridges are more common with aging and are usually harmless, though they might point to dehydration or nutrient deficiencies (or health conditions) in younger individuals. This includes zinc or protein deficiencies, diabetes, hypothyroidism, chronic kidney disease and a number of other conditions your health practitioner can help to diagnose.

Spoon-shaped nails

Nails that curve upward, resembling spoons, can be a sign of iron deficiency or anemia. Known as koilonychia, this condition often improves with proper iron supplementation and dietary adjustments.

Dark streaks or spots

Dark streaks or spots under the nails should not be ignored, as they could be an early warning sign of melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer. It’s essential to consult a dermatologist if you notice these changes.

Bluish nails

A blue tint to the nails may suggest low oxygen levels in the blood, potentially caused by respiratory or circulatory issues. Conditions like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or heart problems could be at play.

Nail Pitting

Tiny depressions or pits in the nail surface are often associated with psoriasis, a skin condition that can also affect the nails. Nail pitting can also be linked to alopecia areata, an auto-immune condition that causes hair loss.

Thickened Nails

Thick, hard-to-cut nails are often the result of fungal infections but could also indicate psoriasis or circulation problems. If thickened nails are accompanied by pain or discoloration, it’s best to seek medical advice.

When to see a professional

While nail changes are not always a sign of serious illness, they are worth paying attention to. Regularly inspecting your nails and addressing any persistent or unusual changes with a healthcare professional can lead to early detection of underlying health issues.

Your nails can’t speak, but they’re always trying to tell you something - especially when they peek at you accusingly from those pretty sandals you have them encased in. Taking the time to listen could be one of the simplest ways to safeguard your health.
